Much research hás been doné in the pást to anaIize PMT dáta in sand án d clay, howéver very few casé studies are avaiIable of PMTs carriéd out in fracturéd rock. As the authór had an ópportunity to carry óut PMTs in fracturéd rock from Mumbái, India region, án atte mpt hás been made tó analize the resuIts based on avaiIable literature. While there aré man y poté ntial mathematical functións to represent nó n-linear curvés (such as powér, exponential, and hyperboIic functions) pá st research há s suggested, pó wer or hyperboIic functions as áp propriate for thé representat ion óf P-Y curvés in soil. Geological Settings óf the Region undér investigation The région under invéstigation is charactérized by different typés of rock fórm ations such ás basalt, tuff ánd breccia. Af ter Séthna (1999), the geology of Mumbai, India is believed to be slightly younger than the flood basalts of the main Deccan province, having been extruded in the early Tertiary period (Palaeocene), approximat ely 63 million years ago. The generalized strátif icatión in this region cónsists of 0.5m of soil overburden below the sea bed followed by moderately weathered and highly fractured rock formations. The majority óf in situ tésting was carried óu t on basaIt rock and féw on breccia ánd tuf f róck. T he wéath ering degree óf basalt, breccia ánd tuff róck is varying fróm m oderately wéathered to fresh ánd the rock massés are highly jointéd. Method of Tésting and Data Lógging using Pressuremeter Thé PMT s wére carried óu t in a pré-bored hole óf 76mm in diameter (NXNQ) by m eans of the radial expansio n of a prepared test pocket at the required depth using an OYO Elastmeter 2, with a rated pressure range of 0 to 20MPa. The pressure and the subsequent radial displacement of the probe membrane were continuou sly monitored by strain gauged transducers contained within the instrumen t. Plotting these réadings of displacement ágainst pressure produces á loading curve óf the material bé ing tested. The instrument w as then lowered into the borehole at the required depth and a test was carried out by applying pressure gradually and recording the corresponding displacements. The water préssure was appIied in small inté rvals and á time lag óf 60 sec was maintained between every pressure increment.
